This
applies after this year's hospital tax hike.
Taxpayers are being forced to build a reserve that is now nearly $150
million for future hospital projects. But Chair Janice Perrino still has not
clearly answered the basic questions taxpayers deserve answers to:
·
Has
the Province made a firm, public construction commitment for the NRGH tower
expansion and cath lab?
·
If
the project is delayed, reduced, or cancelled, what happens to the money
already collected from taxpayers?
·
Is
this money legally locked in for the NRGH expansion and cath lab, or can it be
redirected to other projects?
·
Why
are taxpayers being hit now for money that may not be needed for construction
for another 8 to 10 years?
·
What
safeguards protect taxpayers from simply building a massive reserve without a
guaranteed project?
·
If
the Regional Hospital District only pays invoices once work is underway, why
are taxpayers being told this money must be collected so far in advance?
·
How
much interest will be earned on this reserve, and where will that interest go?
·
What
is the actual taxpayer exit plan if Victoria does not come through?
This is not opposition to a
hospital expansion.
This is
about accountability.
Chair Perrino is not alone in this. Seven other members of Nanaimo council also sit in this Regional
District/Hospital District structure and have supported this direction.
Some of them will be
asking for your support this October.
Before they do, maybe they should answer the questions they have so
far avoided.
