12 MONTHS FOR A 6-MONTH JOB
Only the City and Windley Could Pull That Off
July 26 was supposed to be the grand finale
— Commercial Street’s big reopening. The Mayor was there. The City’s brass were
there. Cameras flashed as they proudly pushed down a bollard, declaring
downtown “open for business.”
Merchants, battered by a year of street closures and lost customers, dared to
hope for a summer rebound.
But surprise — the job wasn’t actually done.
Turns out the landscaping still wasn’t finished. Now, just weeks later, the
street is closing again so Windley and their sub-trades can wrap up what they
missed the first time.
They promise it’ll be finished by next Friday.
We’ve heard that before.
Because in Nanaimo, it’s not a downtown revitalization until it’s over budget,
overdue, and inconvenient enough to make you wonder if anyone at City Hall has
ever actually run a business. if they had, they would leave the street open during business hours, bring out a few flood lights, and finish the damn job at night!
