QUESTION THE COST OF HVAC FOR NAC

Questions For Mayor Krog & Council

Here are questions Nanaimo taxpayers need answered. Did this Council even question the staff recommendations? Use the following to draft your own letter and send it to Mayor.council@nanaimo.ca.

Why did the cost of replacing the HVAC system at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre more than double—from about $5.6 million to $12 million—without any clear explanation of alternatives or options?

Was this truly the only path forward?

Taxpayers deserve to know:

  • Were cost-saving alternatives explored?

  • How much of the increased price was due to GHG-focused upgrades?

  • Were these climate-related features mandated, or voluntarily added?

  • What is the expected payback, if any, on these high-cost green components?

It’s not enough to simply say “costs have gone up.” In a time of high taxes and infrastructure neglect, it’s fair to ask if all options were weighed—and if this was truly the best use of $12 million in public money.

We want answers
