HOUSING AS HUMAN RIGHT - SLOGANS & SPIN?

MORE SLOGANS THAT DON'T DELIVER

The Hidden Cost of a “Human Right”

Municipalities across B.C. are calling on the province to declare housing a human right. It sounds compassionate, but what no one wants to talk about is just how much government itself is inflating the cost of housing.

From zoning delays to permit fees, DCCs, GST, the Property Transfer Tax, and more — governments pile on layer after layer of cost at every stage of the housing process. In cities like Vancouver, these fees can add up to over $200,000 per home. According to CMHC, government-imposed costs can make up as much as 25% of the final sale price.

Declaring housing a right means very little when the same voices behind the podium are the ones making homes unaffordable through overregulation and taxation. If we’re serious about affordability, start by cutting the red tape — not adding more slogans.
