EXORBITANT TAX INCREASES CAUSING HARDSHIP

EXAMPLE OF 17.85% TAX INCREASE

This is a comment taken from a Nanaimo social media site in response to Voice of Nanaimo questioning how city council determines taxpayers ability to keep paying tax increases;.

It is a response to ex-councilor Don Bonner justifying city tax increases. He is typical of Council's response to concern about tax hikes. He basically mocked me saying how in the world can you determine ability to pay.

This Senior Homeowners Tax Went Up 17.85%. It means at this rate her taxes will double in four years giving her a bill of $10,706.00.

"Don

My Chase River property tax this year alone increased from net payable in 2024 of $4542.85 to 2025 net $5353.04 so $810 increase. Which included $477.69 city increase, $102.36 School increase, as well as $230.22 Agencies increase. So the total is definitely over 11% this year. That’s after receiving the seniors grant and if these increases continue to happen it simply won’t be sustainable for my household or thousands of Nanaimo residents."

Unlike the privileged working for the City, this senior can't just give herself an 11.5% raise.
