Council Hears IF YOU Speak UP!

Citizen Action Can Pay Off

The following appears this morning on a social media page called 'Save Long Lakes Loudon Park'. This determined, active group of citizens proves that you can get City Hall's attention if you do more than complain online about what is happening.

After LISTENING to the public two city councilors, Tyler Brown and Sheryl Armstrong, reversed their previous vote, which hopefully will allow for a second look that pleases everyone.

Kudos to this group of Nanaimo citizens who have engaged and made a difference. City Hall is not broken, but just unattended, as we have said on this blog many times. This demonstrates what can happen when we attend and do OUR part in democracy.

From the group's Facebook post:

It is with great relief that we confirm that Plan A for Loudon Park was voted out last night, 6-3, with Tyler Brown and Sheryl Armstrong voting differently this time. Mayor Kroeg, Councillor Thorpe and Councillor Perrino voted the same.
It was a very long night for everyone, finishing at 11pm.
GRATITUDES
We are grateful to Councillor Brown who brought the matter forward for reconsideration.
We are grateful to the Wellington Action Committee who has been monitoring and speaking on behalf of the green space at Loudon Park for the past 3 years.
We thank Mayor and Council for their willingness to hear the community and take a second look. The matter is on the agenda for next meeting May 26 - and the work of finding a balanced plan that works for all is still ahead of us.
Thank you to everyone who has participated in this process from signing petitions to sharing on social to writing letters to showing up last night. We did this together.
Now let's continue to work together until we have a plan that works for all.
